App supporting a safe return to campus

AWS Public Sector Blog Team

This Amazon Web Services blog post describes how the University of Illinois uses mobile applications to support a safe return to campus. The University Safer Illinois app (now retired) tracked users’ symptoms, recorded COVID-19 test results, connected students to medical resources, and helped with contact tracing. Safer Illinois used AWS to securely handle vital information.

Bill Sullivan, director of Rokwire, describes how Rokwire took a “privacy first” approach when designing the Safer Illinois app. “We err on the side of privacy because we absolutely needed people to trust that if they use the app that their data would be secure and would never connect location data and health data. We used AWS to ensure we had a secure system that is updated regularly with the latest protocols for safety, security, and privacy.”
